Eat our Cloves with a meat or lentil stew. Poke three or four cloves into an onion, then drop straight into a stew or casserole to infuse. Or throw two or three cloves straight into your chilli con carne, for a deeper flavour.

Why not try giving sweet things a chai twist. Cloves are one of the key flavours in Indian spiced chai. Make a simple sugar syrup, laced with a few cloves, a stick of cinnamon and a few crushed cardamom pods. Then use it to add a chai flavour to sweet drinks, cakes or puddings.

Cloves originally come from the Maluku Islands in Indonesia – also known as the Spice Islands. There, they mostly use them to make little cigarettes called 'kreteks'. But in ancient China, they were used as early breath fresheners. And in India, they're used to spice everything from sweet teas to perfumed pilaus, as well as in ayurvedic medicines.

The little brown sticks are actually dried flower buds, which come from an evergreen tree. Their essential oils are so pungent, they can even be used as a mild anaesthetic to soothe toothaches, or in massage oils.
