Cole & Mason Nigella Seeds
Eat our Nigella Seeds with a crudité platter. Mix soured cream or yoghurt with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, a dash of smoked paprika, a pinch of nigella seeds and salt to taste. Serve with carrot, celery and cucumber sticks.
Why not try baking your own naan. Add warm water to self-raising flour to make a soft dough. Add in a spoonful of melted ghee and a pinch of salt, knead until smooth, then cover and rest for an hour. Divide into four naans, scatter with nigella seeds and grill for 10 minutes.
Nigella is known by many names: black onion seed, black cumin, black caraway, fennel flower and kalonji. They've been around since ancient times – some were found in Tutankhamun's famous tomb.
The seeds start off white, only turning black once they're exposed to air. They have a naturally toasted taste, with a herby, oniony flavour that works well with breads, roasted root vegetables or scattered over salads.
