recipes - Spiced peppered beef steaks with red onion salsa

Serves 4



  • 2 tablespoons mixed peppercorns
  • 4 x 125g lean sirloin steaks, trimmed of fat
  • Fresh parsley to garnish

For the salsa:



  • 3 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded & chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato juice
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 red onion, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons horseradish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, roughly chopped
  • Black pepper

First make the salsa by mixing together the chopped tomatoes, tomato juice, 1 tablespoon of the oil, red onion, horseradish, coriander and black pepper and mix together well. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.


Preheat the grill to medium. Crush the peppercorns with a pestle & mortar or rolling pin. Brush the steaks with the rest of the oil and cost with the crushed peppercorns.


Place the steaks on the grill rack and grill for 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked to your liking. Serve with the red onion salad and a crisp green salad.
